Introduction

Rheumatology department has been established recently in Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. Rheumatology as a separate department was the need of the day. Pakistan is very short of qualified Rheumatologist and KPK has only two Rheumatology centers and Rheumatology department KTH is one of these.
Assistant Professor Dr.Alam Zeb yousafzai is the Head of the Department. This department is providing services to patients of Rheumatological disorders. It is the center of excellence for rheumatology and patients are referred from all districts of KPK.
In this department all Rheumatological and Immunological disorders are treated. All modern treatment including Biologic therapy are given to the patients according to standard international guidelines.

This department is dealing with following conditions.

  • All type of arthritis like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, undifferentiated arthritis,
  • Connective tissue diseases like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Scleroderma, and MCTD, overlap syndromes and undifferentiated CTD and Anti phospholipid syndrome (APLAS)
  • Myositis like Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis, inclusion body myositis and all type of myopathies
  • Vasculitis like PAN, Bechet diseases, ANCA associated vasculitis, Giant cell arteritis, all secondary vasculitis and undifferentiated vascultis.
  • Crystal arthropathies like GOUT and Pseudogout and other crystal deposit diseases.
  • Autoimmune disorders of Blood both primary and secondary like hemolytic anemia etc.
  • Osteoarthritis and others degenerative disease of age likes Spondyliosis
  • All type of soft tissue rheumatism like frozen shoulder, tendon apathy, CTS, tenosynovitis
  • Metabolic Bone diseases like osteomalacia and Vit D deficiency and osteoporosis
  • This department is also providing services to children with arthritis like JIA and autoimmune diseases.

The Rheumatology department is not only providing clinical services but also teaches and train under graduate and postgraduate students.
This department facilitates all type research activities and are conducting different type of research on rheumatic and autoimmune diseases in collaboration with national and international centers.

  • Establish a rheumatology registry to track the prevalence and outcomes of rheumatic diseases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • Conduct clinical trials to test new treatments for rheumatic diseases.
  • Develop educational materials for patients and healthcare professionals about rheumatic diseases.
  • Collaborate with other rheumatology departments in Pakistan and around the world to share knowledge and expertise.
