Introduction:
The Department of Surgery has been serving the local population since the establishment of Khyber Teaching Hospital. As a tertiary care hospital, our catchment area not only includes the whole of the province but we also receive referrals from the neighboring country, Afghanistan. While the spectrum of diseases and the services being offered has evolved over the course of time, the drive towards accomplishing the vision of becoming the nation’s leading academic department of surgery has been consistent. In recognition for it’s services in the clinical, academic and research fields, the Department received the Best Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Award 2021-2022, recently introduced by the Postgraduate Medical Institute.
The Department is staffed with 15 faculty members, spread across four surgical units. The faculty is intensively focused on undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. Most of the faculty are supervisors and examiners for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. The Department maintains a regular academic calendar for post graduate trainees including sessions on Clinical methods, Lectures, Journal clubs and assessments and award ceremonies.
The Department offers a wide range of services and procedures including Breast, Colorectal, Upper GI, Bariatric, Hepatobiliary and Surgical oncology. It is continuously making efforts towards improvement in it’s services. Towards this end, the first public sector One stop breast clinic was inaugurated in November 2021 by the Honourable First Lady of Pakistan. Mrs Samina Alvi. The Stoma care clinic established in 2021 with the help of Khyber Medical College Alumni Association of North America (KMCAANA), is another example of improved and dedicated patient care. Fortnightly Multidisciplinary meetings are held in collaboration with concerned institutions and departments for the management of Breast, Colorectal and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer as per the international standards. The Department ensures clinical governance through weekly Morbidity Mortality meetings and regular Audits,
The faculty keenly involves itself in professional development to keep abreast with the shifting landscape in systems of healthcare. This includes workshops, courses and research work.
